There are actually 6 Pavement Coffee Houses in Boston: Allston, Boylston, Commonwealth, Fenway, Gainsborough, and Newbury. The Boylston coffeehouse is a convenient location surrounded by many colleges, with the Colleges of the Fenway down the street from it, making this a popular coffee spot for college students.
There are two Starbucks on the same street: one in the Target and one in Star Market. There is a Dunkin Donuts in the gas station near the Star Market. According to some of my friends, who go to school in that area, they prefer going to Pavement for actual "coffee dates", but if they're in a morning rush, they'd prefer to stop at Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts for a quick grab and go.
Depending what time you enter Pavement, it can be either busy or very quiet. Early in the morning, it will be a quiet environment and not as busy. But as it starts approaching noon, it gets busier and busier. There are all sorts of people that come and go, from people in business attire on their laptops to students with textbooks surrounding them to families getting a quick bite to eat. There are tables that face the Fenway area, giving anyone sitting there a good view of the bustling street.
In terms of the actual drinks, the espresso shot is strong and will wake you up quickly. The chai latte is very pretty, but also tastes great. They have quite a few breakfast and lunch options as well to try out.
